Ritual invitation No. 1: Grow Your RootsWe come from darkness — the womb and tomb of the Earth. Just as sleep balances our waking lives, darkness balances the light, both within our psyches and within the many cycles that sustain life. As Winter pulls life inward, roots anchor underground, sustained by unseen networks beneath the soil. At this time of year, we keep an unusual proximity to this darkness… and it can be challenging! Darkness can stir what has been waiting beneath the surface, asking for attention, witness, and care. Naming our struggles and tending our scariest places in community—spoken aloud, shaped through movement, music, color, and form—can weave a root network of connection and belonging, even when light feels distant or unavailable. When we find the courage to face the stories and memories that limit or frighten us, supported by those we love and trust, this courage can liberate spaces inside of us that we previously have not known. If it resonates, take some time in these coming days to sit with darkness. Seek out hollows, caves, or depths in the landscape around you. Ask these places questions. Be open to what they mirror. Be kind to yourself. Trust what arises. Talk about it, write about it, dance it, draw it, play it on an instrument. Share what you find with trusted friends, and let your roots grow deeper through connection. We are seasonal beings, and we are headed for the light.
